CALIFORNIA, U.S. - At its F8 developer conference in California, Facebook announced the launch of a new app called Facebook Spaces.

The social network giant has managed to up the game, by creating a virtual space for Facebook friends to meet and interact using virtual reality.

The app will enable up to four people to appear in the same virtual space with one another, communicate and play games in real time.

Facebook said that the app has been launched in beta for Oculus Rift, the headset built Facebook-owned VR firm Oculus.

It will, the social media company said, enable users to create a digital avatar of themselves based on their Facebook photos.

Further, those users that do not have access to virtual reality can also be brought in through the ability to video call others via Facebook Messenger.

Users can take selfies, draw pictures with virtual pens and fist-bump friends.

Facebook even announced new live 3D camera effects that will be added to the official Facebook app.

This, it said, will enable users to overlay different masks and effects to their selfies and other images before sharing them on the social media site.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Chief executive said the company was focused on "building community" among its users.

Zuckerberg also unveiled the new augmented technology that the company is working on. It is called the Camera Effects Platform that uses a smartphone camera to create better image recognition software, as well as room mapping that can then be edited using 3D effects.

Zuckerberg even demonstrated capturing an office using the software and then virtually filling it with water on-screen.

The CEO said that the new platform could be used as early stages technology to perfect smart glasses or contact lens technology.
